I'm supposed to be on a big yarn de-stash kick but I've blown it already. I didn't set out to purchase any yarn this month (and yes, it is only the second day of the month and to make it work I actually made the purchase last night). I was on the hunt for some tools, specifically a yarn winder. Now this wasn't really something I thought I needed but I also didn't think I needed a swift. What a godsend the swift was when my knitting buddy and colleague gave me her spare one (love love love it) but winding a hank of lace can still be a time consumming process and I have a habit of winding the balls to tight and therefore stretching the yarn. So dear knitting buddy and colleague was raving about the benefits of the yarn winder she got for Christmas. "I must have one," I thought to myself. A trekking I went...now it was bitterly cold here earlier this week so rather than just walking the few block to the local LYS from my office I decided I'd check the driving places first (just in case) Michaels, Zellers and Walmart were a big fail. On the way back there was a parking spot right outside the LYS. Fate was on my side, or so I thought. Sold out. Disappointed, I headed back to the office, plus my lunch break was nearing an end.
I should give Michaels some credit here, they do have the Boye Electric Winder in stock but I wasn't about to shell out $120 for it, especially after the less than flattering reviews I've read about it.
Then I rememembered KnitPicks and the positive things I have heard about them. I began surfing through there site and found a winder for $20 (big difference from$120) and a yarn scale which I figure will come in handy as I continue to destash. I still had no yarn purchases, I was doing good. People seem to rave about KnitPicks needles and the price was right so I through a couple of circulars in my shopping cart as I want to try out the tips and this 'no memory' cord before investing too much into them. It started as a whisper, "yarn" it said. With every page of notions and tools I browsed through, "get some yarn, you know you want to". The voice was getting louder. "I should try some," I thought to myself. "I'm putting an order in anyway and I've never tried any of the Knitpicks yarn and heard good things about it and it's reasonably priced compared to some of the stuff I've purchased over the past year," I argued with the rational side of my brain which was getting outshouted by my addiction gene. So I caved (but not too badly) and added two skeins of the new chroma into my shopping cart. I stopped there (with difficulty) and headed to the checkout. I joyously received my "your order has been shipped" email today and in 5-14 business days I will have new yarn and toys to play with.
While I feel the tiniest bit guilty about purchasing yarn (not the tools though) I can rationalize almost anything so my guilt of adding rather than removing yarn from my stash has been pushed down to the depths of my conscious. Besides, the entire purchase including shipping was less than the Boye winder would have cost me at Michaels.
